I am very interested in archways at the moment. They invite you in because they frame the view from beyond with rounded edges, but they also mysteriously conceal what is on the other side. I became interested in archways from looking at Giorgio de Chirico paintings. I am drawn to paintings with an eerie, but also beautiful, timeless feel. Such as sunsets through archways, or dimly lit rooms.
For this painting, I wanted to show the different spaces and corridors of the mind. Each view through the archways is different, but the overall painting is uniform in color and form. I use balance to convey detachment and the mental straightening-out that happens when we do not want to think about complex emotions. If an archway is both a peek into, and a concealment of what is behind it, I want my paintings to be like that, too.
