Bedroom

oil painting

I started by drawing a cozy bed enclosed on either side with a hallway behind, and also a view of the bedroom from the point of the hallway as well. I wanted to make one painting using both images, and found that repeating the images created a nice sense of rhythm. I was thinking of how the look of a bedroom changes over the course of the day, and how these different times of day create different moods. I think of rooms as a metaphor for interiors of the mind, and this painting shows light and dark rooms intermingling together. I was thinking of Piet Mondrian when I planned the boxy, rectangular rooms, and I was thinking of Chuck Close too since each section is basically a painting of its own.
