Portrait Study 1

Pastel Portrait
Portrait Study 1, pastel on tobacco colored paper 20 in. x 13.5 in., September 2018

This is the first portrait I have ever done with pastels. In my Pastel Portraits fall class we are working from live models each week. I really enjoy the effect of the strong, warm spotlight on the model’s face because of the rich shadows and strong highlights. In this class, I want to practice making skin look alive. I also want to get better at placing the features of the face, and making a convincing portrait. I want to make portraits that are alive and vibrant, and that reveal the heat of the living person.
