Portrait Study 6

pastel drawing
Portrait Study 6, pastel on tobacco colored paper 19.5 in. x 13 in., November 2018

This is my final portrait from my pastels class. (The neck is off, but oh well). I have gotten better at layering and blending to create the subtle shifts in color and shadow in the models’ faces. Now, I am unafraid of working from dark to light to achieve convincing depth or highlight. I find faces much more engaging than still-life setups. Facial features create such interesting shadow shapes, and there are more colors in a face than in a bell pepper, for example. I wonder what I will draw with pastels next!
